goiaba fruit with Harvest in background

HARVEST

Goiaba grows on small, low-growing tropical shrubs that look like evergreen, with each producing many round- to pear-shaped fruits during a season. There are different cultivar types grown all over the world that vary in flavor and color. Red flesh varieties are known to be richer in nutrition than yellow flesh varieties, and the red goiaba that Amafruits harvests in the Amazon regions is considered some of the tastiest as well. Amafruits goiaba fruits are sustainably harvested by small, family farmers then pulped and flash frozen, so you can be guaranteed the same freshness and rich nutritional benefits as you would get in the Amazon.

HISTORY

Goiabas are part of the Myrtle family, which includes other familiar spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Goiaba’s origins trace back to South and Central America. It is believed they were domesticated in Peru several thousand years ago, where archaeologist sites have uncovered guava seeds found stored with other cultivated plants. Today, guavas are widespread around the world with Brazil being the largest producer, where most goiaba is prepared as goiaba juice, goiaba purees and pulps, or cooked down and strained to make ‘goiabada’ (guava paste).

SUSTAINABILITY

We aspire to have a positive impact on the world—sustainability and social responsibility initiatives are foundational to our purpose, and we engage others to do so as well.
